About the farm
Founded in 1998 by Kate Sparks, Laughing Lady Flower Farm has been providing heirloom and specialty cut flowers to the Philadelphia area for over 20 years.
Kate got her start in 1989 growing herbs for jams and sauces which she sold at local farmers markets. Eventually she expanded to a few varieties of flowers. At market one day, Derek Fell — a noted garden writer and photographer in Bucks County — bought her entire stash of foxgloves. Encouraged by his enthusiasm, Kate started reading books about flower farming. She moved her family from a row home in Doylestown Borough to a four-acre property down the road, and applied for an ASCFG membership.
The farm produced flowers for up to five markets at times during the early 2000’s, including Rittenhouse Square. Kate’s first wedding client was a customer at one of these markets.
Amanda Burgan began volunteering in 2015 to gain practical experience alongside her coursework at Longwood Gardens. 2016 marked her first season working for the farm full time, with Kate as her mentor.
When Amanda took over the business after Kate retired in 2018, the small team at Laughing Lady focused on bringing unusual varieties of delicate flowers (typically harder to find through large wholesalers due to their fragile nature) to event customers and local floral designers. Some examples are tweedia, columbine, poppies, Cosmos, Nicotiana, dill, bronze fennel, single-flower marigolds, martagon lilies, bearded iris, and foxglove.
In 2022, the Doylestown field was closed so that a new family can enjoy the property. 2023 will be spent getting to know our new leased plot in Chalfont, PA. During this time, Laughing Lady will not be offering any services, however our friends might be a good fit for you. Please see recommendations here.
About our name—
The name Laughing Lady was coined by Kate’s son Dylan when he was little. It’s what he used to call her.
